Wirral CVS against Hate

The events of the last couple of weeks have been truly shocking. The tragic deaths of three little girls and the serious injuries sustained by 8 others and the 2 adults trying to protect them along with the obvious trauma for other children in attendance, families, friends and neighbours was truly horrific and our thoughts remain with all of them and our sector colleagues in Sefton.

Hiding behind their grief though were racist extremists who have tried to exploit this by sowing fear, division and chaos leading to attacks on places of worship & support, and on individuals who have been made to feel like they do not belong.

This week we have seen that it is possible for peaceful protest but the scenes we saw last week and over the weekend were not that, they were acts of racist and Islamophobic violence carried out and co-ordinated by thugs which sadly led to a great deal of fear in our communities and our organisations whose work is to look after and look out for the most vulnerable.

Wirral CVS condemns the violence, racism and Islamophobia we have seen in the past weeks and indeed the xenophobia, homophobia and other acts of hatred that have become more prominent recently. We stand in solidarity with our members, partners and communities and offer our continued support.

To address the concerns of this week we are working to establish effective communication channels with statutory partners to provide clear information about potential risks. We are also working with our colleagues across the Liverpool City Region and nationally to lobby for appropriate resources to enable organisations to feel safe to return to the incredibly important work of rebuilding trust and cohesion in our communities.
